"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"
Andrew mcquiston,
west oak family office, wellington-altus private wealth
A career in HR can begin anywhere, and for Armstrong Craven’s Asia-Pacific director Helen Coult, it started while studying music at university – a place where she soon discovered a “knack for sales” while running outbound call centres to support her studies.
Having embraced her talent, Helen began to look for a role that could be turned into a meaningful
career. The search landed her on the doorstep of the HR industry, and she took up her first role at a headhunting firm.
Like many people, she didn’t set out to have a career within HR, she says, but when she looked to leverage the sales experience she had gained in call centres, she wanted something more complex –
and that’s when she moved into an executive search firm. After over 17 years in the HR sector, she hasn’t looked back, and she says the human element of that role is undoubtedly what she enjoys best.
“Rather than the one-dimensional sales of phone contracts or electricity contracts, when you start working with humans, everything becomes so rich and interesting,” she explains.
“You can’t control everything, and I actually really like that. There are so many variables – you need to take into account people’s motivations, their background, current situation, how they’ll fit with the business and then the business needs, situation and culture, too.”
Helen worked at headhunting firms for a number of years before taking an in-house talent acquisition role in London, working across all the UK companies in the world’s largest media and advertising agency group. This gave her a “bigger picture” context to recruiting and HR within the corporate environment and provided exposure to businesses at board level for more strategic conversations, consulting on talent pipelining, succession planning and restructures well before the need to hire into an immediate vacancy.
She joined Armstrong Craven in 2015 and has observed the company’s phenomenal expansion over
the past 15 months. The global consultancy provides bespoke talent mapping, insights and pipelining solutions under one roof, and she says that demand for Armstrong Craven’s talent intelligence and
hiring support has grown enormously. With the Great Resignation now underway, that demand is likely
to continue.
She says that Armstrong Craven’s clients love the proposition because it’s cost-effective, rich in insight and truly global. In her role, she works across all sectors as well as with business and HR leaders in all kinds of different organisations.
“Our clients learn about industry trends and best practice, within and outside of their sectors, when we engage with them, just as we constantly learn a huge amount from their expertise. We speak to business leaders who are considering restructures or acquisitions, through to HR leaders and Talent Management who are looking to devise and execute that business strategy from a talent perspective,” she explains.
Armstrong Craven has an incredible, innovative in-house Insights & Talent Analytics team that is involved in every project that the company undertakes. The team delivers bespoke insight projects such as global location insights, talent insights, competitor analysis and skills market analysis, which help inform all of the initial business decisions that filter all the way down through the HR team to activation.
The team also works with Talent Acquisition leaders who are tasked with activating the strategy,
and provides them with support for both immediate hiring and talent pipelining or succession
planning initiatives.
“HR and talent teams are striving to take a far more proactive and strategic approach to talent acquisition; there is no choice now – the battle for great talent has intensified enormously due to remote working, border controls, skills shortages and the need for new combinations of skills in order to succeed in this new global business landscape. And that’s where the talent intelligence we provide during the course of our work is so powerful,” she says.
“I love my job especially the culture at Armstrong Craven. This consultancy is the vehicle that’s enabled me to excel in my career. The breadth of exposure to different markets, sectors and global businesses and the privilege to be able to offer genuinely bespoke, high-quality talent solutions to help clients answer real business problems is a dream. I have made so many great client contacts and we’re all learning from each other and collaborating. On a personal level, it’s taken me several times around the world and a relocation from the UK to Asia-Pacific.”
Citing the quick expansion of Armstrong Craven, she says she is immensely proud to play a key influencing role in the company’s direction and growth, both within APAC and globally.
“Our plans for 2022 are ambitious and exciting, and I couldn’t ask for better colleagues to have alongside me on this journey.”
