Cher Whee Sim is vice president of global talent acquisition in talent mobility and immigration at Micron Technology. Having joined the company in 2010, she now leads Micron Technology’s global recruiting strategy by employing innovative human resource solutions to attract, engage and retain top, diverse talent.
Sim graduated with a Chemistry degree from the National University of Singapore. She was trained in Japan and the US before returning to Singapore, where she started up the country’s first 200mm wafer fabrication facility. She moved on to lead a number of different teams in industrial engineering, finance, technical training and development, and HR.
Since joining Micron Technology, Sim has held a number of senior leadership roles and has successfully spearheaded a broad range of projects. By balancing the human element and corporate objectives, she has empowered teams with a desire to pursue organizational excellence in the semiconductor industry.
For Sim, diversity, equity and inclusion has been a particular focus in her HR work. She recalls being one of five female engineers in a room of 100 – an experience which drove her desire to significantly increase the diversity of STEM talent.
“Sitting in a room and being so underrepresented where our voices were not heard, and our views were not valued, and we were not able to participate in some learning opportunities that were shared over evening drinking in Japan – I told myself at that time that we must achieve at least an increase of five times in women’s representation in the next two decades,” Sim says.
“In recent years, Micron Technology has hired over 40 underrepresented groups in every 100 new hires. This is an [eightfold] improvement. These underrepresented groups include [those who identify based on] gender and ethnicity, and people with disabilities.”
In her role as vice president of global talent acquisition, Sim has felt the impact of talent shortages over the last several years. With the gap between supply and demand widening, her priorities have been ensuring the wellbeing of her team, promoting an inclusive culture, developing agility and leading with empathy.
Sim says that building resilience and agility has been particularly important over the last year, and it has allowed the company to thrive through the global challenges.
“Our team is engaged as they step up to lead,” she says. “They know that their unique strengths, ideas, and skills matter, and this allows them to unleash their fullest potential. I am inspired to see the passion and growth mindset in the team. It is all about being stronger together.”
Throughout the coming year, Sim will be focusing “relentlessly” on Micron Technology’s people, culture and purpose strategies. This includes investing in her team’s physical, mental, social and financial wellbeing, and giving them the tools to develop their careers.
“Underpinning these strategies are our diversity, equality, and inclusion culture, and the development and empowerment of our leaders,” she concludes.
“The trust I’ve had from the company, my community, and my partnerships has allowed me to harness new skills, lead with empathy and build a workplace for all.”
