International giant Telstra is Australia’s largest telecommunications carrier. It provides technology and telecoms services to 18.8 million subscribers as of 2020, as well as 3.8 million in retail fixed bundles, and 960,000 retail fixed standalone voice services.
Telstra has an international presence in over 20 countries, and currently has 3,500 employees based outside of Australia. It has had a longstanding connection with the Asia-Pacific region, and today, the company provides services to thousands of business, government, carrier and OTT customers.
Telstra was recognised as an HRD Employer of Choice in 2022. The organisation has had a particular focus on training, professional development and upskilling over the last 12 months, and has invested a significant amount of resources in technology training and online learning platforms. All of its employees have access to a learning and development catalogue through its Workday platform, and over 13,000 employees participated in technical learning throughout 2021.
Telstra’s employees recorded almost 96,000 learning hours throughout the year, focusing on segments such as security, software engineering, data analytics and product management. The organisation also delivered a number of micro-credentials in collaboration with its university partners, with employees able to gain a globally recognised qualification in just six to eight weeks. “This has been an excellent way for our people to rapidly upskill and reskill,” Telstra says.
“We’ve also invested in areas such as human-centred design, critical decision making, influencing and negotiation skills via LinkedIn Learning. We want our people to build long and successful careers with Telstra, and we’re committed to supporting and enabling their career progression.”
Maintaining access to technology and resources has also been a key focus for the organisation, particularly as it continues its journey as Australia’s leading mobile network. Telstra has equipped all of its people with tools and technology to operate in a hybrid working environment – from mobile devices to standing desks. This served the company well when Australia was thrust back into lockdown life, and a core part of its people strategy became strong communications, supported by the latest technology.
“In 2021, our employee communications focus was to support our people through the evolving COVID situation so that they could be successful in all aspects of life,” Telstra says.
“This included wellbeing communications centred around our people’s flexibility, and their choice in where, when and how they worked. We also invested significantly into people leaders and executive communications, which helped set the tone and shape a culture of regular, open and
two-way communications.”
While other companies rushed to adapt to COVID-19 and hybrid working, Telstra benefited from having a longstanding flexible working policy. As the global war for talent intensifies, Telstra aims to maintain an ongoing focus on hybrid and flexible working, open communication and a strong career development program.
“Flexible working has been at the heart of Telstra’s employee experience for almost a decade,” a company spokesperson says.
“Leaders play a critical role in supporting that, and we are investing in building their capability to have quality conversations with their team members. Ultimately, we believe that our employees will serve customers best when they are engaged, and we are focused on continuous improvement.”
Believing that people give purpose to its technology, Telstra builds a connected future so everyone can thrive. That’s why the company develops technology and content solutions that are simple and easy to use, including Australia’s largest and fastest national mobile network. That’s why Telstra strives to serve and know its customers better than anyone else, offering a choice of not just digital connection, but digital content as well. And that’s why it has an international presence spanning over 20 countries.
In the 21st century, opportunity belongs to connected businesses, governments, communities and individuals. Telstra is proud to be helping its customers improve the ways in which they live and work through connection.
