TPG Telecom, one of Australia’s largest telecommunications companies, has been recognised as an HRD Employer of Choice in 2022 for its forward-thinking HR practices, skilful navigation of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and commitment to employee health, wellbeing and recognition.
TPG Telecom and Vodafone Hutchinson Australia created a “merger of equals” in 2018 to establish itself as the second biggest broadband provider and third in mobile, with a combined fixed and mobile customer base of more than seven million customers, and some of the best brands in mobile and
fixed broadband.
The merger has brought two highly complementary businesses together, and the company now has a greater ability to drive innovation, invest in its own growth, and bring service and product improvements to its customers.
As a full-service telecommunications company, TPG Telecom provides nationwide mobile and fixed networks, which are connecting Australia for
the better.
The organisation's purpose is to build meaningful relationships, and to support vibrant, connected communities.
In 2021, TPG Telecom successfully navigated a series of challenges following the merger and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
While TPG Telecom kept millions of homes, businesses and individuals connected through its mobile and broadband networks, it also worked hard at keeping its employees connected and engaged.

TPG Telecom and Vodafone Hutchinson Australia announced their ‘merger of equals’ in 2018, and the combined company entered into a 10-year network sharing deal with Telstra in 2022. In the height of the pandemic, TPG Telecom moved to a fully virtual platform and redoubled its focus on employee health and wellbeing by hosting regular open forums with its executive leadership, providing company updates and opening up for questions in "Ask Me Anything" segments.
To keep staff informed of the latest COVID compliance measures, TPG Telecom worked directly with state government contacts and resources, ensuring its people received the most up-to-date information.
The company also hosted monthly internal campaigns dedicated solely to the wellbeing of its employees, with a particular focus on mental and emotional wellbeing throughout the months of lockdown across many states.
During this period, TPG Telecom also introduced two new platforms to its employee base: an email sharing service and a new intranet, which it describes as “a major symbol of integration post the 2020 merger.”
Workplace by Facebook also remained a key feature of the company, with employees able to stay connected while working from outside of the office.
Although labour market conditions tightened throughout 2021, TPG Telecom continued to look for and attract new talent. It opened up over 1,000 new job requisitions and received close to 50,000 applications. Some 28 per cent of new roles were filled by internal hires.
Another one of its major projects for the year was the employee value proposition (EVP), which was designed to help build its brand as an excellent employer. TPG Telecom is looking to attract and retain employees by defining the essence of the company, how it is unique, and what it stands for.
The company's four key values of ‘stand together, own it, simple’s better and boldly go’ guide how its teams think and behave, what they prioritise, and the experiences they create for their customers.
TPG Telecom aims to do business in a way which responds to the needs and expectations of all of its stakeholders – including customers, employees, shareholders, regulators, and the wider society.
