Founded in 1998, Transdev Australasia is a leading public transport company with nearly 6,000 employees operating train, bus, coach, ferry and light rail services across Australia and New Zealand. Each year, Transdev transports more than 145 million passengers on over 2,000 vehicles and vessels. It is a part of the Transdev Group, a global network of 83,000 employees in 19 countries.
“At Transdev, we believe public transport plays an important part in how a city comes to life,” says Dimity Smith, Chief People and Culture Officer. “Our day-to-day work influences our families, friends and future generations where they live, work and play. Whatever their role is at Transdev, our Journey Makers – as they are known – contribute to improving the mobility of our customers.
“They have a direct, positive impact on their community and our environment. To support this growth, we look to the dedication, pride and passion of our people, and the camaraderie of our teams on the ground. In return, we offer diverse career experiences in an evolving industry moving faster than ever before.”
The freedom of Transdev’s people to move and grow is also unique; not just in the transport industry, but any employer globally. As a global company active the world over, committed Journey Makers can find themselves working with and taking advantage of the immense expertise of peers overseas. It’s not uncommon for Transdev’s employees to be exposed to multiple transport modes and markets during their tenure, which means there are many longstanding Journey Makers who’ll say they’ve stuck around because it’s possible to start a “new job” within Transdev.
“Transport is a swiftly-changing industry and we’ve undertaken a self-assessment at depth in recent years, overhauling our employee value proposition,” says Smith.
"Public transport is an industry that can carry some baggage. It can be considered male-dominated. It can be viewed as ‘liminal’ in that it carries a person from place to place and for many customers, a good journey is a forgettable one. There can also be some confusion about our role as a private transport operator, too – not many are aware we’re not subject to the political and bureaucratic demands or restrictions in the way our government clients often are.”
Transport is a small industry, so how Transdev interacts with clients and partners is critical. Ensuring they maintain the high esteem they have in the industry is critically important, which is why their strategies aim to ensure employees express visible pride in their work and when dealing with external partners.
They help make pride a matter of principle with their people through a method they call ‘the Five Cs’. These are:
Clarity: Ensuring Journey Makers have abundantly clear objectives and needs, and imbue this same transparency in all their work.
Collaboration and Communication: Transdev maintains frequent, close contact with partners and treats them as collaborators. This fosters an environment of teamwork and yields benefits for all involved.
Cutting edge: Being in an industry like transport requires that Transdev’s people remain abreast of the latest trends and efficiencies. Curiosity in Journey Makers is encouraged and rewarded. This impetus for perpetual reinvention keeps them at the top of their field and is well respected by those they work with.
Customer: The customer is at the centre of all they do. Regardless of whom they’re working with, or at what level, Transdev never loses sight of their reason for being: the customer.
