Rachel Tschannen is the vice president for international HR at Blackhawk Network. She has over 17 years of experience in HR leadership roles and her career has spanned six countries: New Zealand, Australia, France, the UK, British Virgin Islands, and the Maldives.
Tschannen has been with Blackhawk Network since 2020, having started as senior director HR Asia-Pacific. She now holds a multi-regional role within the business, supporting the business across 14 different countries in Europe and Asia-Pacific.
Throughout 2022, Tschannen led projects aimed at improving the employee journey and making HR processes both efficient and more data-driven. She believes that “any process that can continue to be automated, sped up or streamlined is a win,” particularly for data integrity, work streams and defining focus areas for the HR team.
Tschannen says that Blackhawk Network’s high level of flexibility with hybrid and virtual work has also been a key achievement, as well as creating a strong virtual onboarding process for new talent.
“Ensuring that each person is onboarded, led, developed and coached consistently in this new hybrid environment must remain a key focus,” she says. “It’s not as effortless as it was when everyone was in the office all the time.”
In addition to her full-time role, Tschannen is also a regular mentor and an accredited Gallup Strengths Coach, and she holds an Advanced Coaching Certification. She has served as a volunteer mentor through Inspiring Rare Birds, and has spoken as a panellist on growth opportunities and mentoring programs, particularly for women in business.
For Tschannen, her mentoring work is an important part of giving back to the business community, as well as fostering the growth of up and coming talent.
“Women sharing their experiences helps other women overcome adversity and celebrate achievement, and it highlights possibilities they may not have realised yet in their career or life,” she explains.
“Despite how far things have come, which is considerable, there’s still a way to go to achieve equal opportunity, equal pay and affect positive change for women. It doesn’t cost anything to choose to elevate other women and it’s both impactful and rewarding for both sides.”
When it comes to kick-starting a career in HR, Tschannen says it’s vital to gain a broad level of experience across many different industries from the start. Her own career has spanned a number of sectors including fintech, aviation, hospitality, SaaS and creative digital studios. Starting in a generalist HR role helped her learn about the business and have a strong grasp of HR operational foundations.
“Knowing the business drivers, being commercially focused and data driven in order to influence outcomes and strategy, being innovative around drawing candidates to your company, and retaining diverse top talent to work in an inclusive environment should be the focus,” Tschannen says.
“Visibility is key to building strong relationships – picking up the phone or sidling up to people’s desks to have candid conversations continues to give you an authentic view of the business, the people, their wins and obstacles. It helps you strategize about removing blockers – that’s when you become really valuable to the business.”
