"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"

While most HR professionals fall into the industry, Sheridan Heussler, head of human resources at Johnson & Johnson Consumer Health ANZ, knew where she wanted her career to go from the start.
“I always knew that I wanted to work in HR, and so I experimented with different roles and experiences across multiple industries before I joined Johnson & Johnson. I love the company’s commitment to health and humanity and seeing how valued HR is within the organisation. I truly believe the diversity of experiences I have had has helped shape who I am as an authentic and values-driven leader, and as an HR professional.”
Sheridan worked across retail, financial services and professional services before joining J&J, where she was a senior HR business partner before her current position. With her career at J&J now spanning more than a decade, her time with the J&J Family of Companies has encompassed a variety of roles in Australia and New Zealand, as well as roles covering the Asia-Pacific region and Global enterprise. Her specialties include leadership and HR strategy development; strategic talent management; mergers and acquisitions; and diversity, equity and inclusion. In her current role, she has built a new executive leadership team that is diverse, passionate and focused on organisational growth. One of her key achievements has been the development of a multi-year HR and talent strategy to future proof the growth of the Consumer Health business. Seeing the results of HR’s role in the company has been outstanding, particularly where it has translated into achievement of business strategy via engaged and empowered teams, she says.
She explains that improving the talent health and diversity of an organisation year on year by building leaders for the future gives her immense energy, and watching the growth of leaders over time, as well as the leadership impact they have on their teams, is very rewarding. She enjoys coaching others to be at their best and helping employees to identify their authentic leadership to drive meaningful impact. She says she is proud of how healthy and diverse the ANZ Consumer Health critical talent pipelines are due to “companywide commitments to personal development, always hiring talent for their future potential, and ensuring diversity in our selection panels and a diverse slate of candidates to choose from”.
Sheridan notes that embracing these commitments has also translated into stronger customer satisfaction, with pharmacy customers ranking the company as #1 personal care supplier and #1 team in the 2021 Advantage Survey. J&J Consumer Health ANZ also recently received its 2021 employee engagement results, which showed improvement in all categories compared to 2019, and double-digit growth in talent development.
Looking towards the future, Sheridan says that HR leaders need to prepare for employees to have different expectations, and will need to respond quickly to retain talent. “The world around us has shifted significantly in the last two years. The way we work has been greatly disrupted – new business models are emerging every day, test and learns are becoming the new normal, building digital capabilities for the future is critical, and our employees have different expectations of their employers regarding flexibility, health and wellbeing, and purpose.” Sheridan believes that HR professionals have to build a leadership culture that can pivot to employees’ changing needs.
“How we win the hearts and minds of our employees is critically important. We also need to listen to our employees and people leaders – they have valuable insights and know the business better than HR. Our role is to empower them to enact positive change,” she says.
