“When I think about the thing that gives me the most joy and energy, it is about supporting other staff on their leadership journey and assisting and empowering them to be the best they can be”
Adrian Camm,
Westbourne Grammar School
Ashley Sardjoe has been the vice president, country head people & organization for Novartis Canada since 2021. He held previous roles with the firm, including country head, people & organization for Novartis Netherlands and global HR program manager for Novartis Global (Switzerland), along with spells at Accenture and EY in Europe.
Despite his success, Sardjoe has not had a typical career path.
“I kicked off my career in management consulting and had the opportunity to work with some of the world's biggest and most prestigious companies, and to work on high-profile projects with significant impact.”
His standout ability was noticed and he was offered a route into HR, which Sardjoe seized. Ironically, a fundamental key to his success has been expertise in other areas.
“It’s been my experience in driving performance improvement transformations and my business acumen. Having a deep understanding of the business, industry, and market allows me to make data-driven decisions which enables any organization to achieve its goals.”
Now an HR leader on a global scale, Sardjoe lists the areas where he focuses:
· talent
· transformation
· culture
“By investing in these areas, my organization can attract and retain top talent, create a culture of adaptability and accountability, and position the organization for long-term success in a rapidly changing business environment.”
Sardjoe places a priority on maintaining a consistency in his communication style. The intent is to maintain open and honest communication, listening actively and engaging with colleagues in a respectful and collaborative manner.
In his current role, Sardjoe is committed to creating a culture driven by a deep sense of purpose and based on:
· building trust
· fostering collaboration
· promoting inclusivity
Novartis Canada underwent its largest transformation in its history in 2023, which included reducing staff numbers by 30 percent and embedding fundamental new ways of working. This has been achieved without a negative impact on business performance or continuity.
Sardjoe explains, “I believe that previous experience in driving performance improvement transformations, strong communication and interpersonal skills, deep understanding of cultural norms and values, and most importantly the best HR team in the world have enabled me to do this."
The overarching factor that dominates his operational methods and has also driven his impressive career progression is doing business “the right way”.
Even if difficult decisions must be made, Sardjoe remains resolute in dealing with them in the correct and proper manner.
“Personally, I believe that integrity is the foundation of a healthy workplace culture, and it involves consistently adhering to the values and principles that guide the organization's operations, especially in the highly regulated environment Novartis is acting in.”
Sardjoe’s attitude also extends to the wider impact of the business.
“For me doing business ‘the right way’ goes beyond meeting legal requirements and involves taking responsibility for the impact that the organization has on employees, customers, and the wider community. This includes promoting sustainability, social responsibility, and ethical practices throughout Novartis’s supply chain and our entire value chain.”
