Leadership

Geoff Allan is the chief executive of Austroads and the managing director of Transport Certification Australia, a subsidiary of Austroads. He has worked in various roles in the Queensland and Australian governments, including as chief operating officer of the National Transport Commission. Dr. Allan is vice president of PIARC (the World Road Association) and chair of PIARC’s Strategic Planning Commission. He is a member of the Council (Board) of the Centre for Professional Engineering Education. He has a doctorate in public sector management and a Master of Social Science and a Bachelor in Town Planning degree. He is also a joint company secretary of Austroads.

Dr. Geoff Allan 

Sharon Johnson leads the financial, strategic, human resources, legal and risk management functions at Austroads. With over two decades of experience, she has built a reputation as a dynamic executive known for her astute commercial acumen and ability to drive complex organisational change. Johnson is a Fellow of CPA Australia, holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting), a Bachelor of Laws, and is an Associate of both the Governance Institute of Australia and the Chartered Governance Institute. She is also a director of Transport Certification Australia and was appointed joint company secretary of Austroads on 1 August 2024.

Sharon Johnson 

Gavin Hill has 25 years of experience in surface transport reform and regulation. He has extensive experience within the machinery of government, extending to the New South Wales Cabinet Office and Ministers of Parliament. Hill is recognised for his ability to manage complex stakeholder environments by navigating strategic, regulatory, technological and operational dimensions. He is known globally through his work with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development/International Transport Forum, and as president of the International Forum for Heavy Vehicle Transport & Technology. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and an Honours Degree in Economics.

Paul Davies

General Manager Research, Guidance and Practice

Paul Davies has overseen the Austroads Work Program since 2021. He has over 25 years of experience in government and industry. Before joining Austroads, he spent seven years in senior roles at the National Transport Commission, where he led a range of national transport reforms. Prior to this, he held various roles in research program delivery, public policy, sustainability, transport and energy, in the South Australian and Australian governments, and technical roles in industry. He holds an honours degree in engineering and has completed the Company Directors Course at the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Paddy Goodall has extensive experience in operations, high reliability and safety critical environments, risk management, advisory, assurance, governance and digital transformation. He is a skilled relationship manager and has worked as a negotiator in operational, commercial, industrial and regulatory settings. Goodall has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is also a director of Transport Certification Australia.

Matt Brunsdon has 20 years of experience in leveraging data and technology to drive innovation and growth. He oversees the development and implementation of Austroads’ cutting-edge data analytics and technology solutions. He is passionate about harmonising product and technology delivering solutions which drive successful outcomes. Brunsdon holds a degree in eBusiness from Macquarie University. He is also a director of Transport Certification Australia.

Matt Brunsdon

Trent Czinner was appointed group executive, legal and external affairs at TPG Telecom in August 2020. He was previously Vodafone Hutchison Australia’s general counsel and company secretary from 2013 to 2020. Czinner has worked as a telecoms and technology lawyer since 1998. From 2011 to 2013, he ran the legal function for Salesforce.com in Australia and New Zealand. He has a Bachelor of Law and Administration from The University of Newcastle, was admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 1995 and has a Master of Business Administration from the Australian Graduate School of Management. He is a certificated member of the Governance Institute of Australia.

Another major focus at Austroads is the ongoing training and development of team members. Austroads provides financial support for those wanting to pursue university degrees and encourages everyone to share their development experience with colleagues across the organisation. “Because training and development are tied to individual employee performance plans, each one of our people is empowered to shape their own growth and development pathways,” explains Dr. Allan. Diversity, equity and inclusion is also a priority within Austroads to engage those from a broad range of ages, cultures, educational backgrounds and life experiences. The organisation hosts morning teas, lunches, team meetings and all-staff meetings as ways of celebrating diversity. “We’ve attracted young people as interns who have approached Austroads to gain valuable experience at the beginning of their careers. They’ve sought us out because of our values, our collaborative nature and how we do things to improve public outcomes,” shares Dr. Allan. “We also have a positive track record of people wanting to return to Austroads after they’ve pursued other career opportunities in the later stages of their careers.”

Eager to keep raising standards for its employees, Austroads is in the process of implementing new programs including:
